Job Description: The Wall Street Journal is seeking an enterprising reporter to cover U.S. policy and regional security in the Middle East, an essential role in our global geopolitical coverage. The wide-ranging beat includes responsibility for coverage of Islamic extremism and U.S. counter-terrorism as well as the rivalries driving conflicts in places such as Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and involvement of outside powers, such as Russia, in the region.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience covering foreign policy and security in the Middle East. The ability to source deeply within the Defense Department, State Department and diplomatic corps is essential as is knowledge of the global security landscape.

The ideal candidate will produce high-metabolism, high-quality coverage and has a track record of generating scoops and finding original angles off the news. The candidate will be able to deliver high impact enterprise stories and bulletproof copy that offers sharp insight on broad themes. The person will also have experience and skill operating in difficult places.

The reporter will be expected to deliver both quick, breaking news as well as authoritative analysis and narrative features. The successful candidate is a team player––working with colleagues in the Middle East and around the globe to cover this important story.

Fluency in Arabic or Hebrew in addition to English is required. The position will be based in Dubai or Tel Aviv, reporting to the Middle East editor.

You will:

  • Break agenda-setting news on your beat.
  • Conceptualize and deliver deeply reported enterprise stories.

  • Work with colleagues around the world in a 24-hour-a-day global newsroom.

You have:

  • At least ten years of reporting experience dominating a highly competitive beat and a track record of producing award-winning journalism.
  • Deadline skills to report and write clearly under pressure.

  • Proven ability to develop sources and write with authority on what is happening and what it means.

  • A track record of tackling ambitious projects, finding original approaches to coverage and working with visuals to find creative storytelling techniques.

  • A deep understanding of the ins and outs of U.S. geopolitics and regional security in the Middle East.

  • Fluency in Arabic or Hebrew in addition to English.
